PORTLAND, Maine — The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has dipped below $2 for the first time since 2009, as the average price in Maine continued to fall in advance of the Christmas holiday.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline in Maine dipped more than 2 cents in the past week, to $2.11, according to the price tracking website GasBuddy. That comes as the national average dropped to $1.99, according to GasBuddy and AAA surveys.

The price in Maine is 44 cents lower than one year ago and 8 cents lower than a month ago.

Experts have tied the drop in prices to high production and lower seasonal demand during the winter months.

In Maine, gas stations offered prices as low as $1.91 per gallon at stations tied to membership-based wholesalers Sam’s Club and BJ’s and at many stations offering a lower price for cash payments.

The highest per-gallon price in the state was registered as $2.36 per gallon, according to a customer report on GasBuddy from Sunday.
