RAYMOND, Maine — A 12-year-old boy told authorities Tuesday morning that an unknown man in a white van stopped him at the bus stop and tried to lure him into the vehicle by claiming the boy’s family had experienced a medical emergency.
The incident took place shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Plains and Webbs Mills roads in Raymond, according to a release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
The boy told school officials that a GMC cargo van pulled up while he waited at the bus stop. The driver, a middle-aged, bald, “unshaven” white man, allegedly told the youth he needed to get into the van because of the family medical emergency.
The boy refused and walked away, and the man then drove away with no further contact.
Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office declined to name the boy’s school, saying only that he attends a school in Regional School Unit 14, based in Windham and Raymond.
According to the release, the van carried multiple antennas on its roof and its rear door windows were tinted.
Anyone who witnessed or has information about the incident can call Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Donald Foss at 774-1444 ext. 2112.
