WATERVILLE, Maine — Seven people were injured, one seriously, when a car struck a horse-drawn hayride Friday afternoon near the Waterville Elks Lodge building, according to Waterville police.
The accident was reported about 2:45 p.m. on Industrial Street, a dead-end road, Sgt. Alden Weigelt said Friday night.
Fifteen people were riding in the horse-drawn hay cart when it was struck, he said. Six people were treated and released at local hospital. One person was taken by Lifeflight to a Portland hospital.
Weigelt said the identification of the individuals involved most likely would be released Saturday.
The hayride was part of an annual Christmas Day dinner event at the lodge that draws a large crowd, Weigelt said.
Waterville police declined to release information about the car that hit the hayride but the driver, Cathy Simmons of Sydney, described the car as a silver Chrysler sedan with Massachusetts license plates to the Morning Sentinel.
In addition to Waterville police, crews from the Waterville Fire Department, Clinton Ambulance, Delta Ambulance, the Maine State Police, the Fairfield Police Department and the state fire marshal’s office responded.
