ORONO, Maine — Police are investigating a rash of burglaries that have been occurring at residences rented by University of Maine students.

Orono Police Chief Josh Ewing said Monday the burglaries have occurred in the areas of Park, Peter and Pleasant streets. He believes the suspect or suspects are targeting off-campus residences vacated by students away on winter break.

Ewing said about six burglaries have been reported, and police are worried that those responsible could strike again as police start their investigation.

“We’re just putting everything together,” Ewing said.

Among items taken include small electronic devices and some jewelry. None of the burglaries are believed to have occurred on the UMaine campus, Ewing said.

Anyone with information should call Orono police at 866-4000 and ask to speak to the on-duty commanding officer.
