FRYEBURG, Maine — A local man was injured Sunday night in an explosion and a fire inside his son-in-law’s garage, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

Matthew Beardsley, 52, and his son in law, Tony Woitko, were transferring fuel from one storage tank to the other when the explosion happened around 6:30 p.m., McCausland said.

Beardsley suffered burns over 75 percent of his body while Woitko was not injured, McCausland said. The garage was destroyed in the fire.

Beardsley suffered critical injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center. The incident remains under investigation.
