In her second season as coach of the Brown University women’s swim team, former Orono High and Canoe City Club swimmer Kate Kovenock has guided her team to a 1-1 record in dual-meet action this season with a win against the University of Massachusetts and a loss to Yale along with a fourth-place finish in an eight-team invitational hosted by Princeton University.

Brown returns to racing Jan. 16 against Harvard and University of Pennsylvania. Kovenock was an assistant at the University of Notre Dame and at Kenyon before accepting the position at Brown.

Mainer shines in Florida

Rocco Aceto, a 2007 Maine Swim Hall of Fame inductee, coached his Trinity Prep 200-yard female medley relay team to first place at the 1A Florida State Meet. Aceto’s team finished in 1 minute, 42.9 seconds.

Since his arrival at Trinity Prep in 2005, 10 swimmers have qualified for the Olympic Trials and 13 swimmers have received interscholastic All-American honors.

Aceto, also a member of The Peddie School Hall of Fame, began his swimming experience as a member of the Pine Tree Swim Club in Portland.

Tycz sets Maine records

At the Winter East Junior Nationals held at Georgia Tech earlier this month, Bath’s Long Reach Swim Club’s Caitlin Tycz, 16, competing in the 200-yard butterfly, clocked a 2:01.2, establishing Maine records in both the 15 and 16 and open age groups. Tycz is coached by Maine Swim Hall of Fame member Jay Morissette.

Greely swimmer competing for Arkansas

Sarah Easterling, racing in the Georgia Tech Invitational for the University of Arkansas, swam in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.2) and the 100-yard backstroke (56.5) The junior Razorback, a former Maine Swimmer of the Year, won the Class B 100-yard backstroke and 200 IM for Greely High in each of her four years competing for the Rangers.

Ellsworth notches first win over Bangor

Ellsworth’s recent dual-meet boys win over Bangor High, the first ever for the Eagles, included several highlight swims for EHS, including the 200 medley relay (1:42.6), the 400 free relay (3:23.6) and a 53.9 100 back from Cooper Holmes. Bangor’s Colby Prouty finished with an impressive 1:01.3 100 breaststroke.
