PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police charged a local man with driving to endanger and endangering the welfare of a child after he reportedly was found unconscious from an apparent drug overdose with a young child in his vehicle.

Peter Coffin, 37, was summoned Tuesday on the charges, according to a news release from Portland police.

Police were called to 72 Commercial St. around 8:15 p.m. Sunday after passers-by saw an unconscious person behind the wheel of a stationary vehicle. Witnesses said the person wasn’t breathing.

Those who found the man performed CPR until medical personnel from the Fire Department arrived, according to police.

Coffin recovered consciousness and was taken to a local hospital. The child was not hurt and was left with a family member.

Police did not say on what drug or drugs Coffin is believed to have overdosed. He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 4.
