AUBURN, Maine — An Auburn home is likely a total loss after a Friday night fire.

Auburn firefighters responded to 33 Joseph Lane, shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, when the homeowner reported a fire in the living room. Despite the fire being contained quickly, the extensive damage to the house means it may be a total loss, fire officials said.

Firefighters found heavy fire conditions in the first floor of the home that was under construction. The homeowner was in the basement when the fire started and got out safely after smoke detectors went off.

The fire likely was caused by combustible items left too close to a fireplace, but final determination on the cause will be made after the investigation is completed.
