MACHIAS, Maine — The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of 700 pounds of scallops from a Machias business Wednesday.
Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree said Thursday the scallops were reported stolen at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6.
The culprits gained entry to the Machias Bay Seafood building by breaking padlocks on the door, Crabtree said. The value of the stolen shellfish is about $10,000, he said.
“We are working with the [Maine] Marine Patrol on this [and] have some evidence,” Crabtree said, adding investigators are “chasing down leads.”
