PORTLAND, Maine — Maine State Police said a series of crashes along the turnpike Thursday night started when a dog ran into the road.
Police said a Toyota RAV4 hit the dog.
The driver then pulled over, which caused traffic to back up.
Police said the congestion caused a five-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer and a two-vehicle crash.
No one was seriously injured, but police said the dog died.
