BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor police cruiser crashed into the side of a car driven by a Dedham woman after she failed to stop for a stop sign Sunday night.

The crash happened shortly after 10 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway and Somerset Street near John Bapst Memorial High School, according to the crash report.

Bangor police Officer Jordan Bragan, 24, was driving his cruiser on Broadway toward downtown when a Honda driven by Elizabeth Gray, 59, of Dedham attempted to cross Broadway on Somerset Street without yielding to oncoming traffic.

Bragan’s cruiser struck the front passenger side of Gray’s, sending it into a concrete pole near the front of John Bapst.

The report states that Gray said she had looked down for something on the passenger seat of her car, and by the time she looked up, she had run the stop sign. Bragan said he saw the other car enter the intersection without stopping, but didn’t have time to stop short.

The report says heavy rains and high winds also may have played a part in the crash.

“She apologized several times for running the stop sign,” according to the report.

Gray was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center after complaining of chest pain caused by her seat belt. She was released early Monday morning. Bragan was not injured.
