BANGOR, Maine — About 500 Emera Maine consumers remained without electricity Tuesday night, but crews were working to restore service.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, 560 Emera Maine customers were still in the dark in the wake of a weekend storm that produced high winds and rain and knocked out power to 24,000, according to the company.

Wind gusts reached 60 mph in some locations, and damage included broken utility poles and fallen wires.

Emera crews were joined Tuesday by another 50-plus line and tree-trimming crews, and all customers are expected to have power back by Tuesday night.

Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Fitch said a crash in Orrington knocked out power to 1,000 customers in town after a man struck a utility pole on Brewer Lake Road.

Fitch said Ernest Lawford, 64, of Orrington was not hurt, and Emera crews had just restored power to the area when the crash occurred about 5:20 a.m. Tuesday.

No wires draped over the roadway, and Fitch said the pole will be replaced.

Central Maine Power reported late Tuesday only 19 of its customers remained without power. More than 32,000 CMP customers lost power during the storm.

Power was expected to be restored to all CMP customers by the end of Tuesday.
