A reaction to a substance on Sunday morning was the cause of a medical emergency that landed New England Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones in the hospital after a visit to the Foxborough, Massachusetts, Police Department.
The Boston Globe reported Wednesday that Jones used synthetic marijuana, which is not illegal in Massachusetts, before walking to the nearby police station for help. He was transported to Norwood Hospital but later discharged and was at the Patriots’ practice facility the next morning at 6:30 p.m. for weight training.
The NFL is aware of the situation and is reviewing the matter. According to Massachusetts law, synthetic marijuana is a Class D drug in the same group as phenobarbitol, a prescription medication.
“Chandler Jones was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and released that day. He reported to work on time Monday morning and has participated in all meetings and practices since then,” the Patriots said Tuesday in a statement.
According to The Globe, Jones, 25, did not overdose on pills, as a WEEI radio report in Boston previously indicated.
Jones led the Patriots during the regular season in sacks with 12 1/2, had 44 tackles and four forced fumbles and was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time.
The Patriots are preparing for an AFC divisional playoff game on Sunday at home against the Kansas City Chiefs.
PATS NOTES: The New England Patriots re-signed wide receiver DeAndre Carter to the practice squad and released offensive lineman Torrian Wilson from the practice squad on Wednesday. Carter, 22, signed with the Baltimore Ravens as a rookie free agent in May and was released Aug. 31. The Oakland Raiders added Carter to their practice squad on Sept. 16 and he remained there until his release on Dec. 1. Carter was signed to New England’s practice squad the first time on Dec. 15. Wilson, 24, signed as a rookie free agent with the Detroit Lions in May and was released Sept. 5. He landed on the Patriots’ practice squad on Nov. 10.
