DEXTER, Maine — A fast-moving, windswept fire flattened a two-story house on Airport Road early Wednesday morning, according to officials.
Wind gusts made the fire nearly impossible to fight, Dexter Fire Chief Matt Conner said.
“Once the wind got into that house, there was no stopping it,” he said. “[With] winds like that you can have as much water as you want, but when it’s blowing right at the fire trucks it’s a hard fire to fight.”
Crews got the call around 2 a.m. Wednesday, and flames were shooting out both floors of the residence, Conner said.
The three occupants of the house managed to escape unharmed, and Conner said he did not hear any working smoke detectors when he arrived at the scene.
“I didn’t have the chance to speak with them very much,” he said.
Conner said the fire marshal’s office is investigating, but foul play is not suspected.
Crews from Dexter, Corinna, Garland, Dover-Foxcroft and Sangerville responded. Conner said the home was insured.
