BANGOR, Maine — A winter storm cranking its way up the Eastern Seaboard is expected to miss Maine this weekend, but that didn’t stop the Bangor Police Department from offering some winter weather advice to folks in the mid-Atlantic states.

A posting written on the department’s Facebook page Thursday evening generated more than 15,000 likes and 10,000 shares as of Friday morning.

The post written by Sgt. Tim Cotton was humorous, as you might expect, but heeded some great advice to folks who don’t typically see big snowstorms, such as pacing yourself while shoveling, taking care of neighbors, making sure electronics are charged and having plenty of gas in your vehicle.

“Don’t shovel early and don’t wait too long. Pace yourself,” the post read. “DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, buy all the bread on the shelves. As a lifelong Mainer, I recommend cereal. No better reason has been invented to eat Golden Crisp, Honeycomb or Captain Crunch.”

The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings for Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Cotton’s post also advised folks in the mid-Atlantic not to panic, because snow is merely “just frozen rain.”

“Be safe and and well and if you have any Cap’n Crunch left after the storm, it keeps very well. Bring it up this summer,” the post read. “The men and women of the Bangor Police Department are rooting for you. You got this.”

Forecasters are expecting the storm to miss Maine, with a quiet weather weekend on tap.
