BAILEYVILLE, Maine — A fire reported as appearing through the roof of the mill in Baileyville turned out to be burning in a dumpster on the roof.
By 7:20 a.m., the fire at Woodland Pulp was out and firefighters were leaving the scene, said a dispatcher for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
He said the fire originally was believed to be through the roof. However, that turned out not to be true.
“It was just [in] a dumpster that had some rubber in it and some other debris,” he said.
Company spokesman Scott Beal confirmed the fire had been in a dumpster on the roof of the new tissue machine building.
“The dumpster is used to contain construction debris associated with the installation of the tissue machine building roof,” he said.
No one was injured in the fire, and no damage was reported to the building, machinery or construction activities, Beal said. Only minor resurfacing of approximately 2 square meters of roof will be necessary.
“This event will not impact the tissue project or current mill operations,” he said.
The company expects one of two new tissue machines to go online sometime before the end of March and the second to be put into operation in the second quarter of the year.
