ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Southwest Harbor man is facing a drug charge in connection to an incident in Ellsworth last summer, according to police.

Ryan Miller, 33, was found to be in possession of a brown powder substance when police dealt with a report of three people acting suspiciously in the Wal-Mart parking lot, Ellsworth police Lt. Harold Page said.

The substance was initially thought to be heroin, but the powder did not test positive for the drug, according to Page. He added that it was sent to Augusta for lab testing.

The test came back positive for alpha-PHP, better known as flakka, a synthetic drug.

“This is significant because this is the first time the Ellsworth Police Department has come across this very dangerous drug,” Page said in an emailed statement.

Miller was recently charged with unlawful possession of a Schedule W drugs, a Class D misdemeanor, and has a court date of Feb. 16.
