BANGOR, Maine — City police are searching for a woman who apparently called in a hoax about shots being fired on Kenduskeag Avenue on Tuesday night, according to Sgt. Tim Cotton.
“This woman went into a local pharmacy and asked to borrow a man’s phone for an emergency call,” Cotton wrote in a posting on the department’s Facebook page.
The woman allegedly then called 911 and notified dispatch that loud screams and the sounds of gunfire had been heard at a Kenduskeag Avenue address, according to Cotton.
The sergeant’s post also said multiple officers were sent to the area.
“Upon their arrival at the address, they found nothing of the sort,” Cotton wrote. “No screams, no gunshots, nothing.”
Cotton said police were able to locate the man’s phone “through the miracle of cellphone technology,” and officers were able to go through video surveillance and the woman “left the store smug and smiling,” the sergeant said.
Police are asking anybody who may know the woman’s identity to call 947-7384 and use the department’s tip line by pressing extension 6. A private message on Facebook can also be sent, as well as an email to nathaniel.alvarado@bangormaine.gov.
