FREEPORT, Maine — Nike is pledging $1 million for a new track and turf field in Freeport, which will be named after a Maine Olympic athlete.

The all-weather, eight-lane track will be built at the Freeport High School.

Organizers of the project say the track will be named after Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson, the winner of the first women’s Olympic marathon in 1984.

The total cost of the project is $3.2 million. The project still must be approved by voters in RSU 5 in a June or November referendum.
