LEWISTON, Maine — The owner of a dog who dropped it off outside the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society earlier this week has been identified and questioned by police, according to Lewiston police.
Lewiston police announced in a post on their Facebook page Friday that the case has been forwarded to the district attorney’s office for review.
The dog was struck and killed by a vehicle on Main Street in Lewiston on Thursday morning.
Several tips from the public were key in identifying the owner, according to the post.
A woman claiming to be the owner called Portland radio station Frank FM and said she dropped off the dog to protect her three children, according to the Sun Journal of Lewiston. The woman said she was a 21-year-old single mother from Auburn.
A video of the owner dropping off the dog has gone viral since it was shared by the Humane Society on Facebook. The shelter wrote on its page Friday it has “high hopes that justice will be found for this dog.”
The owner’s identity was not disclosed, as the individual has not been charged with a crime.
