LEWISTON, Maine — Two men were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine on Friday after police shut down an alleged meth lab in downtown Lewiston.

Joseph Marcous, 29, who rents apartment No. 203 at 333 Lisbon St., and 28-year-old Samuel Johnson, whose address was not immediately available, were arrested after Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and Lewiston police secured the area around the apartment and evacuated about 20 people from the building, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Authorities were following up on reports of meth manufacturing at the apartment, according to McCausland.

The two men were taken to the Androscoggin County Jail. The MDEA remained at the Lisbon Street apartment at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

This is the sixth time this year that MDEA has investigated a meth lab report, according to McCausland.
