STONINGTON, Maine — A 47-year-old Deer Isle man was charged Friday with arson and aggravated criminal mischief in connection with a 2014 fire that destroyed a Stonington home.
David Smith was arrested Friday on charges filed by the state fire marshal’s office, according to a release from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
On Nov. 15, 2014, a two-story home at 25 Sunset Drive burned to the ground. According to fire investigators, Smith had been hired by the house’s new owner to clean out the house before the owner demolished it, according to McCausland. The fire started on the second floor of the home, and no one was injured, investigators said.
Officials from the fire marshal’s office have been investigating the fire since it occurred, and only recently had the Hancock County District Attorney’s office authorized charges to be filed against Smith.
He was released Friday on bail and is scheduled to appear in Hancock County Superior Court in February.
