THOMASTON, Maine — A Waldoboro woman was arrested Sunday morning after police say she was caught stealing from the local Wal-Mart less than three months after being barred from returning because of a previous shoplifting incident.
Jillian Richards, 35, was charged with felony theft, criminal trespassing and violating a condition of release. The theft was elevated to felony level because of previous theft convictions.
The affidavit filed by Thomaston police with Knox County Unified Court states that Wal-Mart store security apprehended the woman after she stole $83 worth of items including a car phone charger, three DVDs, a pen, air freshener and a cable.
Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Baroody asked for Richards to be held without bail because of the repeated thefts with the most recent charge coming in October. He said she failed to appear in court in December on the previous charge.
Defense attorney Jonathan Handelman asked for bail to be set at $1,000 cash. He said she has a mental health problem and that her risk to public safety is low.
Judge Susan Sparaco agreed with Handelman and set bail at $1,000 cash.
