BOWDOIN, Maine — Mira R. Graziano, 18, of Bowdoin died in a single-vehicle crash Monday night on Route 201. She was declared dead at the scene, Bowdoin Fire Chief Tom Garrepy said Tuesday morning.
Graziano was the granddaughter of Joseph Graziano, whose landmark restaurant, Graziano’s Casa Mia Restaurant, in Lisbon, closed in 2012 and was demolished in March 2013.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s deputies and Bowdoin fire and emergency medical personnel were called to Route 201, also known as Augusta Road or Brunswick Road, at 10:24 p.m., where they found a single vehicle had crashed into a tree near Rocky Ridge Orchard.
Firefighters extricated Graziano, who was the sole occupant of the 2002 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, and emergency medical workers performed CPR before declaring her dead.
A LifeFlight of Maine helicopter was called and arrived at Bowdoin Central School before turning around, Garrepy said.
Lisbon EMS staff also went to the scene, and Bowdoinham firefighters set up a landing area at the school, he said.
Graziano was not wearing a seat belt, according to a news release from Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry.
Merry said deputies, led by Deputy Steve Thibeault, are investigating and reconstructing the crash.
“It is unknown exactly what caused the accident to occur,” Merry wrote. “As part of any fatal accident investigation, deputies will trace the operator’s whereabouts prior to the accident and whether there was any impairment.”
The family has organized a GoFundMe site to help pay for funeral expenses.
