MANCHESTER, Maine — State police are looking for a man who allegedly led police from multiple agencies on a chase topping 100 miles per hour Thursday night, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
A trooper had attempted to pull over Steven Black, 28, for speeding on Route 202 but Black did not stop for the trooper, according to McCausland.
Once Black reached speeds topping triple digits, the trooper broke off the pursuit. Later, Winthrop police attempted to stop Black, but officers lost sight of him along Pond Road, McCausland said.
A short time later, Black’s car was found crashed into a tree near the Manchester-West Gardiner town line, but Black had bolted on foot, McCausland said.
Troopers searched for Black for several hours late Thursday and into Friday morning along the shore and on Cobbossee Lake, but he remains on the lam, according to McCausland.
A state police dog assisted with the search, which covered about 5 miles.
Black is facing charges of operating after suspension, driving to endanger and eluding a police officer. Black is a transient known to frequent the Augusta area, and he is 5 feet 9 inches’ tall and weighs 180 pounds. Anybody who knows where he is should call Maine State Police in Augusta at 624-7076.
