CASTINE — The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners surged to a 15-point lead at the end of the third quarter and then held off Johnson State (Vt.) for a 60-51 women’s basketball victory in North Atlantic action Friday night.
Alayne Felix scored 18 points to lead MMA (12-7, 8-4 NAC) while Tess Clark and Kristi Willey each chipped in with 10. Willey also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while Alex Winchester chipped in with seven points, six rebounds and five assists.
Kasey DeGreenia scored 13 points to lead Johnson State (9-11, 6-7) while Ashley Goddard grabbed 10 rebounds to help give her team a 38-34 advantage.
UMF 84, Green Mountain 26
At Farmington, the University of Maine at Farmington used double-figure scoring by five different players to pick up the North Atlantic Conference win over Green Mountain College.
Meghan Smith led all scorers with 15 points for UMF (11-8, 9-3 NAC) on 6-of-8 shooting. Smith added five rebounds and three assists. Jenessa Talarico chipped in with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists. Haley Felkel and Emma Duggan each added 11 points and Kennadi Grover had 10.
Torie Cowell guided the Eagles (0-18, 0-13) with 10 points and six rebounds.
Castleton 65, Thomas 27
At Waterville, Castleton University (Vt.) rolled to a 26-5 first-quarter lead en route to improving 16-4 overall and 11-2 in the North Atlantic Conference.
Makayla Farrara scored 14 points to lead Castleton and Jade Desroches added 12.
Kate McAllister paced Thomas (2-18, 1-12) with 10 points and Ashleigh Gagne chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.
Colby 65, Middlebury 47
At Waterville, on senior weekend at Colby College, the Mules’ three seniors combined for 49 points and 11 3-point shots to beat Middlebury in NESCAC action at Wadsworth Gym.
Carylanne Wolfington tied a school record with seven 3-point shots on the way to a game-high 23 points for Colby (12-9, 4-3 NESCAC). She was 7-for-10 from long range to tie Tracy Nale ’07, Alison Cappelloni ’10, and Brooke Chandor ’15 for the school record.
Wolfington and fellow seniors Mia Diplock and Desi Smith will be honored before Saturday’s game with Hamilton. Smith was 3-for-6 from long range and had 15 points, while Diplock added 11 points, four assists, and two steals.
Emily Davis came off the bench with seven points, seven rebounds, and two steals for the Mules. Haley Driscoll added six rebounds and point guard MaryKate Caverly had a game-high six assists.
Eileen Daley finished with 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting, five rebounds, and two assists for Middlebury (11-9, 3-4). Colleen Caveney was 7-for-11 from the field to finish with 15 points and three assists. Alex Huffman had a team-high eight rebounds, while center Catherine Harrison had six points and five boards.
Men’s Basketball
GMC 95, UMF 66
At Farmington, Thomas Brown poured in 29 points, grabbed eight rebounds and notched four assists to help Green Mountain College (Vt.) roll by UMaine-Farmington.
Cameron Anderson added 14 points for GMC (16-4, 11-2 NAC) and Javier Lugris added 12.
Anfernee Dent paced UMF (2-17, 2-10) with 20 points. and six rebounds while Alan Young added 10 points.
Castleton 76, Thomas 75
At Waterville, Julian Santos Molina hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to give Castleton University (Vt.) a four-point lead and the Spartans held on for the win after Thomas’ Mike Akanji hit a 3-pointer with a second remaining.
Tondi Mushandu finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead Castleton (7-13, 6-7 NAC). Edmund Fitzgerald chipped in with 12 points and Rob Coloutti added 11.
Levi Barnes paced Thomas (11-9, 7-6) with 20 points, Dayne Savage added 12, Justin Murray put in 11 and Carlos Gonzalez netted 10. Gonzalez also had nine rebounds and Murray had five assists.
NC State at Duke
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is expected to be back on the sideline as the Blue Devils attempt to win consecutive games for the first time in almost a month at 2 p.m. Saturday when North Carolina State visits for an ACC matchup. Krzyzewski did not make the trip for Duke’s 80-71 victory at Georgia Tech on Tuesday due to illness.
Grayson Allen drained seven 3-pointers and scored 27 in the Blue Devils’ triumph last time out, coming two games after he poured in 28 at N.C. State on Jan. 23 in an 88-78 win. Duke’s second-leading scorer Brandon Ingram added 25 two weeks ago against the Wolfpack, who are 1-3 in their last four games overall and have lost four of the past five road contests. N.C. State’s Anthony Barber, who leads the ACC in scoring, has recorded at least 30 points in four of his past five contests but was limited to 19 in the other against the Blue Devils. Barber is the first Wolfpack player since David Thompson (1975) to score 30 or more in three consecutive games.
