AUGUSTA, Maine — A man wanted in connection with a chase last week in Manchester and Winthrop turned himself in Sunday at the Augusta Police Station, according to the Maine State Police.
Steven N. Black, 28, a transient known to frequent the Augusta area, remained Monday at the Kennebec County Jail unable to post $2,000 cash bail, according to jail personnel.
He was charged with operating after suspension, driving to endanger and eluding a police officer, according to a press release issued last week by Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Black on Thursday night allegedly led police from multiple agencies on a chase with speeds topping 100 mph, according to a previously published report.
A trooper had attempted to pull over Black for speeding on Route 202, but Black did not stop for the trooper, according to McCausland.
Once Black allegedly reached speeds topping triple digits, the trooper broke off the pursuit. Later, Winthrop police attempted to stop Black, but officers lost sight of him along Pond Road, McCausland said.
A short time later, Black’s car was found crashed into a tree near the Manchester-West Gardiner town line, but Black had bolted on foot.
Troopers searched for Black for several hours late Thursday and into Friday morning along the shore and on Cobbossee Lake, but they did not locate him.
