HOULTON, Maine — A 32-year-old Houlton man was arrested Sunday morning and charged with aggravated assault in connection with the beating of another man at a residence here.
Besides the assault, Leonard Devoe Jr. also was charged with violation of bail conditions following an early morning incident at 8 Maliseet Drive, Houlton Police Chief Joe McKenna said Monday.
Police were called at 5:08 a.m. and told there had been a stabbing at the residence. Upon arrival, officers found one individual with what appeared to be severe head and face injuries, and a second individual with a possible stab wound.
Devoe Jr. was accused of beating a 32-year-old Mars Hill man during a dispute over an alleged theft of an electronic cigarette.
“During the investigation, it was determined that all parties had been drinking and an allegation of a theft had occurred,” the chief said. “An altercation ensued and the alleged [thief] was beaten by a family member of the theft victim. During the assault, the alleged [thief] displayed a knife in self-defense and the attacker was cut.”
McKenna said the injury to Devoe Jr. was not a stab wound, but resembled more of an abrasion and did not require medical attention.
The Mars Hill man was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital for his facial injuries and was still being treated at the hospital on Monday, the chief said. Police are not planning on charging him with any crime.
Devoe Jr. remained at the Aroostook County Jail on Monday afternoon. Information about the original crime he was out on bail for was not immediately available.
