HOULTON, Maine — A 25-year-old man was taken by helicopter to the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor Sunday evening after accidentally shooting himself, according to police.
Justin Hulbert, 24, of Houlton reportedly shot himself with a new handgun while he was showing the weapon to friends, Houlton Police Chief Joe McKenna said Monday.
Police went to 6 Prospect St. to follow up on a 911 hang-up call when they discovered the shooting incident had taken place.
Hulbert was not at the residence when police arrived but had been taken to the Houlton Regional Hospital by a private vehicle. He then was taken by ambulance to the airport in Presque Isle and flown to the Bangor hospital.
McKenna said the bullet travelled through Hulbert’s hand, into his leg near the knee, and out the opposite side of the leg into his calf.
Hulbert was still at the Bangor hospital Monday afternoon in serious condition.
No charges are pending in the case, the chief said.
