HAMPDEN, Maine — An 11-year-old boy was hospitalized Monday after he was struck by a car on Route 1A in Hampden, according to Hampden police.

The child, whose name was not disclosed, was crossing the busy road around 8:38 a.m. when he was struck by a sedan driven by Yodit Rosenbauer, 20, of Glenburn, said Hampden police Sgt. Joel Small.

Rosenbauer was traveling toward Winterport at the time of the crash, Small said at the scene near the old Hampden Academy. Police believe the boy was heading to school.

“He was crossing from the east side to the west side toward the [elementary] school, so that would make sense,” Small said.

The sergeant said traffic was heavy at that hour, and Rosenbauer had apparently glanced at a navigational system just before striking the boy.

Small said speed was not a factor in the crash as Rosenbauer was traveling at about 20 miles per hour.

The child was alert and conscious at the scene and was taken to an area hospital to receive treatment for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Small said.

“He was on the ground but seemed to be in pretty good spirits when we saw him,” the sergeant said.

Police charged Rosenbauer with distracted driving.
