BANGOR, Maine — An estimated 1,500 customers in downtown Bangor were without power Monday afternoon due to an equipment malfunction at a substation, according to Emera Maine.
An apparent power surge knocked out electricity at some downtown Bangor businesses and government offices about 11 a.m. Monday. Downtown residents and workers saw their lights flicker, but they came back on for most. Power stayed out in some places, including Penobscot Judicial Center, where some court proceedings were delayed.
About 12:30 p.m., more lights went dark, and outages surged from 124 to more than 1,500. Some were restored within a few minutes, but parts of town, including Exchange and Central streets, were still out.
Shortly before 2 p.m., the utility reported all customers in the downtown area were back on.
Motorists are asked to use caution, as many streetlights stopped working.
