APPLETON, Maine — Residents turned out Tuesday night to approve adding two more members to the town’s Board of Selectmen.

More than 100 people turned out and overwhelmingly approved the change, Board Chairman Donald Burke said Wednesday.

The special town meeting was initiated by a petition drive from residents. The board currently consists of three members. A spokesman for the petitioners said last month that there have been instances when board members have abstained from voting because of potential conflicts of interests and it has left the board unable to take action.

The election for the two new members will be held in June. One person will be elected to a one-year term while another would serve two years. Following the initial terms, the seats will be for three years.

Burke said he had no position on the change.

“I told everyone I don’t have a dog in this fight,” he said.

Residents also approved borrowing up to $650,000 for renovations to the Appleton Village School, which was built in 1982. There is a variety of work to do on the school, Burke said, including improvements to the ventilation system.
