UNIONTOWN, Pennsylvania — Sam Carapellucci poured in a game-high 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on Wednesday afternoon, powering the University of Maine-Fort Kent to an 83-60 victory over Silver Lake in the opening round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division I women’s basketball national tournament.
The fifth-seeded Bengals (19-5) now battle top seed Concordia College of Alabama at 11 a.m. Friday in the Main Arena on the campus of Penn State Fayette.
UMFK dominated on Wednesday, building a 46-28 halftime advantage. The Bengals shot 50 percent (34-for-68) from the field and outrebounded Silver Lake 39-38.
The winners received two other double-double performances as Ericka Saucier registered 27 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, while Romanalyn Inocencio contributed 13 points, 15 assists and six steals. Danielle Carrillo added eight points.
Inocencio’s 15 assists broke the USCAA Division I tournament single-game record.
The 20-5 Lakers of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, were led by 11 points and five rebounds from Danelle Buck and nine points each from Danielle Byrum and Kaela Cheesman (4 assists).
Silver Lake wound up shooting 31 percent (22-for-70) but connected for 11 3-pointers.
UMFK overcame 22 turnovers and forced several of the Lakers’ 22 miscues.
Men’s Lacrosse
St. Joseph’s 17, UMF 1
At Portland, Michael Finn and Luigi Grimaldi scored three goals each to lead Saint Joseph’s College of Standish to a season-opening victory over the University of Maine-Farmington.
Finn also provided three assists and Grimaldi added two for the Monks, who received two goals apiece from Jake O’Brien (2 assists), Cam Boucher (assist) and Mark LaPierre. Connor Trainor made four saves.
Travis St. Pierre scored the goal for the Beavers off an assist from Cameron McAllister and Caleb Carr made eight saves.
Husson men picked 4th
The Husson University men’s lacrosse team has been selected to finish fourth in the North Atlantic Conference in the preseason coaches poll. Coach Mike Craig’s Eagles received a total of 57 points.
Defending champion Castleton was selected to finish first with five first-place votes and 76 points, followed by New England College (4 first-place votes, 75 points), Maine Maritime Academy (60), Husson (57), Lyndon State (43) and Thomas College of Waterville (34).
Rounding out the poll were Johnson State (23 points), Green Mountain (20) the University of Maine-Farmington (17).
Bowdoin senior honored
Bowdoin men’s basketball senior Lucas Hausman has been named one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Jostens Trophy on Tuesday.
The Jostens Trophy is awarded to an outstanding NCAA Division III men’s and women’s basketball player who excels on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
Hausman was the 2015 NESCAC Player of the Year and led the conference in scoring with a school-record 25.3 points per game this year. He was a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American with a major in Economics.
Off the court, Hausman has contributed in the community as part of team volunteer efforts at the Mid-Coast Hunger Prevention Program, Team IMPACT and Special Olympics.
