BANGOR, Maine — A pair of local women were arrested early Thursday morning on heroin charges, according to officials.
Monique Nichols, 24, of Hudson and Wanda Wyman, 53, of Bangor are both facing a charge of aggravated heroin trafficking, a Class A felony, according to Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Commander Peter Arno.
Arno said a half-pound of heroin seized from the women was brought into Bangor from New York for resale.
The arrests occurred after investigators at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham and MDEA officials launched an investigation into an inmate allegedly coordinating drug importation from behind bars, according to Arno.
Arno did not disclose the name of the male inmate.
Drug agents determined over the course of the investigation the man was contacting people outside of the prison to travel to New York City to obtain heroin to resell in Bangor.
Arno said drug agents learned Wednesday Nichols and Wyman were headed south to pick up heroin and bring it to Bangor.
Bangor police and MDEA agents stopped the women’s vehicle as it exited Interstate 95 onto Hammond Street at 2 a.m. Thursday, and the women were subsequently arrested.
The seized drugs are worth $60,000 and are equivalent to 2,300 doses. A thousand dollars in cash was also seized.
The women’s arrests mark the second heroin bust in the city on Thursday, as a Connecticut man, Eric Maia, was arrested on cocaine and heroin charges at a Bangor motel.
Bail for Nichols was set at $2,000 and $50,000 for Wyman.
