BRUNSWICK, Maine — Former Bowdoin College President Barry Mills will co-host a New York City fundraiser Wednesday for Bowdoin alumnus and Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson, who is running to be mayor of Baltimore.
Trayvon Free, a writer for The Daily Show, will co-host the event with Mills at the Central Park West home of Sue Lehmann and Ted Dreyfuss, according to Mckesson’s campaign website. Tickets for the event cost $250 to $6,000.
Buzzfeed reports that Dreyfus is a former executive at Citibank, worked for the Clinton Foundation and serves on the board for Teach for America, an organization through which Mckesson taught math in New York City.
Mckesson, who graduated from Bowdoin in 2007 and was a leader in student government, returned to the college in September to meet with new President Clayton Rose and to speak to students.
Mckesson told the Bowdoin students at the time that “change requires work.”
“I can name white privilege, I can see white privilege and I can see its impact,” he said at the time. “[But] somebody who has it has to use it to disrupt it.”
Mckesson is campaigning in New York City, according to a Facebook site for the event, to encourage attendees “to be a part of the movement that will set a new course for cities across our country.”
