HAMPDEN, Maine — Members of the Maine Warden Service are searching the Penobscot River about a mile downstream from Hamlin’s Marina after a report of an object seen floating in the water Friday afternoon.
“We haven’t found anything,” said Maine Warden Service Sgt. Alan Gillis around 4 p.m. at the Hampden Marina, where wardens had launched a boat.
A Forest Service helicopter circled overhead, sweeping the river’s banks, checking and rechecking the surface from Bangor to Winterport.
The search is the second to occur on Friday. Bangor Fire Department used a boat to search the waters in the vicinity of the marina at around 1:30 p.m. after someone reported seeing a suspicious item in the water, but nothing was found, Capt. John Prentiss said.
Another person reported to Bangor Police Department early in the afternoon that they had seen a “suspicious object” in the water behind Hollywood Casino that they thought could have been a body.
Searchers have been scanning several miles of the river ever since a Maine Maritime Academy student was reported missing in Orono last month. David Breunig, 21, was last seen the night of Feb. 26 near the Stillwater River, which flows into the Penobscot River.
Investigators have said he might have fallen from the Orono railroad bridge that crosses the Stillwater River.
