NEW YORK — Orono High School running standout Tia Tardy won the 1-mile race in the Emerging Elite competition at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships Saturday at The Armory.
Tardy, a junior, finished in meet-record time of 4 minutes, 55.57 seconds to earn the national title, edging Sam Peterman of Amherst, New York (4:58.52) and Lainey Studebaker of Centerville, Ohio (4:59.99). All three runners competed in the second heat of 12 competitors in timed finals as a field of 12 also competed in the first heat.
The national meet featured an Emerging Elite division and a Championship division with Tardy, Orono teammate Becky Lopez-Anido and Hampden Academy’s Paul Casavant all competing in the Emerging Elite.
Casavant picked up a 12th-place finish in the 2-mile run with a time of 9:24.09. Rohann Asfaw of Maryland won the race in 9:11.08.
Tardy also competed in the 400 where she finished 28th (58.90) while Syaira Richardson of Virginia won the event in 56.0.
Lopez-Anido recorded a 24th place in the 800 with a 2:16.25 clocking while Camille Davre of Wisconsin won the event in 2:09.23.
