The University of Maine’s softball team split a pair of games on Friday in Clearwater, Florida, beating Marist College of New York 10-1 in the opener before losing to Kent State (Ohio) 6-3 in the second game.
Maine is now 6-9 and will conclude its spring trip with a games against Rutgers University and Long Island University on Saturday and Florida A&M on Sunday. All of the games will be in Clearwater, Florida.
In the opener, freshman left fielder Alyssa Derrick drove in five runs with a three-run homer, run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly to lead Maine past the Red Foxes in six innings due to the eight-run rule.
Annie Kennedy hurled four innings of three-hit one-run ball to even her record at 3-3. Erin Bogdanovich threw two innings of two-hit shutout relief.
Felicia Lennon and Janelle Bouchard had a double and two singles apiece for the Black Bears; Meghan Royle doubled and singled and drove in two runs and Rachel Harvey singled twice.
Bouchard had an RBI as did Erika Leonard, who doubled.
Maureen Duddy had two singles for Marist and Krysten Van Natta had an RBI double.
Marist fell to 11-5 before beating Maine’s America East rival UMass Lowell 4-2 later in the day.
In the second game, Bailey Brownfield’s run-scoring double, a Shelbi Tilton sacrifice fly and an outfield error that allowed two runs to score enabled the Golden Flashes to erase a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the first.
Ronnie Ladines pitched a complete game for the win, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts and three walks.
Maddy Grimm and Hunter Brancifort had RBI doubles for 14-5 Kent State along with Brownfield.
Bouchard had two singles and a sacrifice fly for Maine and Harvey and Lennon each had a double.
