Kesley Mitchell poured in 45 points on Sunday to lead third-seeded Ohio State to an 88-81 victory over West Virginia in the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament at Columbus, Ohio.
Mitchell’s point total is fourth-highest in NCAA tourney history. She made five 3-point baskets and was 18 of 22 from the free-throw line.
Shayla Cooper added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Buckeyes (26-7), who advanced to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time in school history.
Bria Holmes scored 21 points and Tynice Martin added 16 for the sixth-seeded Mountaineers (25-10).
Syracuse 76, Albany 59
Brittney Sykes scored 24 points to lead the fourth-seeded Orange to the victory over the America East champion Albany at Syracuse, N.Y.
Alexis Peterson added 22 points for Syracuse (27-7), which set a school record for victories.
Shereesha Richards scored 23 points for 12th-seeded Albany (28-5).
South Carolina 73, Kansas St. 47
At Columbia, South Carolina, the Gamecocks (33-1) rolled to another big win after beating Jacksonville by 36 in the opening round and then eliminating the Wildcats (19-13) Sunday night.
South Carolina started strong as Tiffany Mitchell scored 16 of her 20 points in the first half to spark the victory.
Breanna Lewis paced the Wildcats with 21 points.
Syracuse is up next for South Carolina on Friday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
DePaul 73, Louisville 72
Jessica January scored 18 of her season-best 25 points in the first half as the sixth-seeded Blue Demons edged the third-seeded Cardinals at Louisville, Ky.
January made two free throws with 14.5 seconds remaining, the second one breaking a tie. She also had eight rebounds and five assists for DePaul (27-8).
Briahanna Jackson scored 20 points for Louisville (26-8). The Cardinals had a chance to take the lead but Myisha Hines-Allen was called for a charging foul with 1.7 seconds to play.
Mississippi St. 74, Michigan St. 72
Victoria Vivians scored 24 to help the fifth-seeded Bulldogs knock out the fourth-seeded Spartans at Starkville, Miss.
Breanna Richardson knocked down a 3-pointer with 34 seconds remaining to give Mississippi State a 72-69 lead. The Bulldogs (28-7) were able to protect the lead down the stretch.
Branndais Agee scored 21 points for Michigan State (25-9). Tori Jankoska added 17.
UConn 101, Robert Morris 49
Freshman Katie Lou Samuelson scored 22 points and Breanna Stewart had 18 as Connecticut blew out Robert Morris 101-49 Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Storrs, Conn.
The No. 1 Huskies (32-0) took a 37-point lead in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way. They led by 49 points at the half and 61 going into the fourth quarter.
No. 16 seed Robert Morris (20-13) was led by Anna Niki Stamolamprou’s 11 points. Coach Sal Buscaglia is retiring after a 38-year career.
Connecticut, which has won 70 straight games, plays Duquesne in the next round Monday.
Duquesne 97, Seton Hall 76
Dava’Nyar Workman scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the ninth-seeded Dukes on Saturday in Storrs, Conn.
Workman was one of four Dukes (28-5) to score in double figures.
Tabatha Richardson-Smith scored 17 points to lead the No. 8 seed Pirates (23-9).
Maryland 74, Iona 58
Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 19 points to pace the No. 2 seed Terrapins on Saturday in College Park, Md.
Maryland (31-3) allowed the 15th-seeded Gaels (23-12) to get within seven early in the fourth quarter after leading by as many as 19.
Maryland hosts Washington on Monday.
Washington 65, Penn 53
Kelsey Plum scored 24 points as the Huskies got past the Quakers in College Park, Md.
Talia Walton added 18 points for seventh-seeded Washington (23-10) on Saturday.
No. 10 seed Penn (24-5) could have been just the third Ivy League school to win a game in the history of the tournament.
Florida St. 72, Middle Tennessee St. 55
Leticia Romero scored 17 points to lead the No. 5 seed Seminoles in College Station, Texas on Saturday.
Florida State (24-7) had 21 turnovers, including 14 in the first half, but was able to hold off the No. 12-seeded Blue Raiders (24-9).
Middle Tennessee’s Alex Johnson led all scorers with 22 points.
Oklahoma 61, Purdue 45
Peyton Little scored 20 points as the Sooners advanced past the Boilermakers on Saturday in Lexington, Ky.
No. 6 seed Oklahoma blocked 13 shots. No players for 11th-seeded Purdue scored in double figures.

Tyra Buss scored 17 of her 23 points in the second half as the ninth-seeded Hoosiers knocked off the eighth-seeded Bulldogs on Saturday at South Bend, Ind.
Amanda Cahill added 14 points for Indiana (21-11). Tiaria Griffin scored 18 to lead Georgia (21-10).

Ariel Atkins scored 15 points as the second-seeded Longhorns routed the Hornets on Saturday at Austin, Texas.
Empress Davenport added 13 points for Texas (29-4). Danielle Clark paced Alabama State (19-12) with 13 points.

Nirra Fields scored 16 points to help the third-seeded Bruins dispatch the Rainbow Wahine on Saturday at Los Angeles.
Kennedy Burke added 15 points off the bench for the Bruins (25-8). Megan Huff scored 11 points for Hawaii (21-11).

Lili Thompson scored 17 points as the fourth-seeded Cardinal rolled over the 13th-seeded Dons on Saturday at Stanford, Calif.
Stanford (25-7) prevailed easily in the coaching matchup of Cardinal legend Tara Van Derveer against Jennifer Azzi, one of Stanford’s all-time best players. Rachel Howard scored 14 points for San Francisco (21-12).

Madison Guebert scored 19 points and the 12th-seeded Jackrabbits overcame 22 turnovers to upset the fifth-seeded Hurricanes on Saturday at Stanford, Calif.
Macy Miller added 18 points for South Dakota State (27-6), which is advancing to the second round for the first time since 2009. Adrienne Motley scored 19 points and Laura Cornelius added 18 for Miami (24-9).
South Florida 48, Colorado St. 45
Courtney Williams scored 31 points to lead the sixth-seeded Bulls past the 11th-seeded Rams on Saturday at Los Angeles.
Williams scored 18 points in the second half for South Florida (24-9). Jamie Patrick had 17 points for Colorado State (31-2), which saw its 28-game winning streak come to an end.
Kentucky 85, UNC Asheville 31
Makayla Epps had 24 points as the third-seeded Wildcats built a 37-16 halftime lead and coasted to victory on Saturday at Lexington, Ky.
Tianna Knuckes led No. 14 seed UNC Asheville with eight points.
Texas A&M 74, Missouri St. 64
Courtney Walker scored 29 points and the No. 4 seeded Aggies held off No. 13 Missouri State at College Station, Texas.
Tyonna Snow had 22 points and Kenzie Williams added 18 for Missouri State.

Brianna Turner had 16 points and Madison Cable added 15 as the No. 1-seeded Irish advanced easily on Saturday at South Bend, Ind.
Kala Green led No. 16 North Carolina A&T with 12 points.

Sophie Cunningham scored 20 points and Jordan Frericks added 19 to power the No. 10 Tigers to an upset of the No. 7 Cougars on Saturday at Austin, Texas.
