CARIBOU, Maine — Forecasters are keeping an eye on a low-pressure system expected to bring snow and freezing rain across the state Thursday night into Friday.

According to the National Weather Service center in Caribou, up to 8 inches of snowfall is expected in the St. John Valley.

A winter storm warning has been issued for northern Aroostook County, with ice and freezing rain also possible.

The precipitation is forecast to start as snow before changing over to rain during the day Friday.

The Caribou forecast center also posted a winter weather advisory for Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, Washington and southern Aroostook counties. Up to 5 inches of snow could fall in northern Piscataquis county.

The NWS office in Gray also has posted a winter weather advisory for northern Franklin and central Somerset counties, with 3 inches of snow possible in those areas.

Southern and coastal counties can expect mainly freezing rain, with much of the southern and coastal part of the state under a freezing rain advisory.

Precipitation was forecast to last into Friday afternoon, making roads slick and possibly hazardous for commuters.
