MILLINOCKET, Maine — Stearns Junior/Senior High School went into lockdown briefly on Friday after a student angry over a cellphone message went to confront another student, Superintendent Frank Boynton said.
Boynton said that the student was in the school’s front conference room near its main entrance at about 11:50 a.m. when the offending message was received. Boynton, who was present and declined to say why the student was in the room, called for the lockdown when the student went into the hallway, he said.
The student never got anywhere near the person he was targeting. Police arrived in about five minutes and took the student into custody, at which point Boynton ended the lockdown, the superintendent said.
“We had an issue with a student and took a precaution,” Boynton said. “We are working to try to get all the information together right now.”
The student could face disciplinary action including suspension or expulsion. Boynton said he expected to bring the matter before the Millinocket School Committee at one of its next two meetings. Under school regulations, the school board determines whether students are expelled.
The board next meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
