HAMDEN, Connecticut — Dani Edmands hit a two-run double to highlight a three-run fifth inning that carried Quinnipiac to a 4-2 softball victory over the University of Maine on Friday afternoon.
Abby Johnson belted a solo home run in the first inning for the Bobcats (9-12) to support Casey Herzog and Sydney Robey, who combined on a five-hitter. Herzog gave up four hits and two runs through five innings, then Robey worked two scoreless innings allowing a hit with four strikeouts.
Quinnipiac did not commit an error.
Erika Leonard paced the Black Bears (8-11) with a double and a single and Felicia Lennon posted a run-scoring single. Megan Royle also doubled to support losing pitcher Molly Flowers, who surrendered five hits and four runs (3 earned) with five strikeouts and two walks.
Millikin 10, UM-Farmington 1
At Clermont, Florida, Whitley Baker pitched a five-hitter and struck out 11 with no walks to propel Millikin University of Decatur, Illinois, to victory.
Brooke Heimerl singled three times with an RBI to pace a 12-hit attack for the winners (9-6). Alyssa Voegele posted two singles and two RBIs and Alyssa Visvardis stroked two double with an RBI.
Ashley Gleason hit two singles for the University of Maine-Farmington (1-10) and Margaret Fogarty had an RBI groundout. Emily Vitone took the loss in the circle for the Beavers, who committed five errors.
Men’s Lacrosse
Norwich 17, MMA 8
At Castine, Connor Loughran (assist) and Matt Flaherty scored three goals each to propel Norwich to victory over Maine Maritime Academy.
Josh Jenkins (2 assists) and Ryan McCarthy (assist) tallied two goals each for the Cadets (1-5), while Dylan Avery (assist), Ian Kennedy (assist), Aidan Moultan, Alex Bowen, Jeremiah Ellement and Cody Moore registered a goal apiece. Ian Kriger made eight saves.
Dean Samuelson scored four goals to propel the Mariners (0-5), while Michael Martel scored two. Alex Grant-Roy and Tim Grant chipped in with a goal each, while Brendan Broderick recorded four assists. Cody Schell made 10 saves.
Baseball
Eastern Nazarene 15, UMPI 2
At Watertown, Massachusetts, Nick Story laced a bases-loaded triple to right field to highlight a five-run sixth inning in Eastern Nazarene’s victory.
Kurt Picarelli chipped in with a two-run homer for Eastern Nazarene (9-6) and Josue Basilis and Justin Wagner each drove in two runs.
Zachary Carmody held UMPI to two hits and two runs while walking four and striking out five. Four relievers followed with three scoreless, hitless innings.
Matt Cauchon’s double and single were the only hits for UMPI (4-11). He also drove in a run.
Wis.-Whitewater 2, USM 0
At Auburndale, Florida, Ankur Shah and Matt Langlie combined to spin a six-hitter as the undefeated University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks shut out the University of Southern Maine Huskies.
Shah, making his first start of the season, went eight innings allowing just five singles while striking out seven to earn his first win. He did not walk a batter. Langlie earned his first save pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Sam Stauble had two hits for the Huskies to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Stauble was the only USM player to reach second base against Shah, that coming in the second inning when he singled and stole second.
