GRAY, Maine — A local man and woman were arrested in Auburn on Friday afternoon and charged with robbing the Gray Rite-Aid on Thursday.

Sarah L. Leighton, 34, of Gray and Shawn M. Small, 19, of New Gloucester each were charged with Class B felony robbery, according to a release from Lt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Leighton allegedly drove Small to and from the pharmacy for the purpose of committing the robbery, Foss said. Small is accused of entering the store and confronting a pharmacy employee while wearing a black mask, showing a demand note for narcotics and saying he had a firearm, although none was displayed, police said. He then allegedly fled the store with prescription narcotics.

Sheriff’s deputies, assisted by Auburn police officers and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency personnel, arrested the pair in an Auburn apartment about 2 p.m. Friday. They were taken to Cumberland County Jail, where they remained Friday evening, held on $25,000 cash bail each.

A court date was not available Friday evening.
