BANGOR, Maine — A Kennebunkport man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for setting fire to his restaurant two years ago, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

Karl Maine, 59, received a 16-year sentence, with all but eight years suspended, to be followed by four years of probation during a hearing on Tuesday in York County Superior Court.

Maine was convicted of arson during a four-day trial earlier this year.

Evidence showed that Maine started the fire at Jake’s Diner on Route 25 in Limington in February 2014.

Surveillance video from a neighboring store showed Maine leaving the restaurant and smoke billowing from a rear storage room less than three minutes later.

Fire investigators say Maine started the fire to get out of about $7,000 of debt from the business. The building that was destroyed was owned by Aaron Sleeper. It had a value of $142,000.
