ROCKLAND, Maine — A citizens group will hold a public forum next week about the city’s trash disposal options.
As city councilors consider options for the community’s long-term solid waste disposal, Renew Rockland will hold a recycling and waste forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at City Hall.
“The goal of this forum is to give the community an opportunity to learn about the different options that the city is considering, ask questions and contribute ideas to help us make informed and value-driven decisions regarding recycling and solid waste management,” said Nate Davis in a news release issued by the city. Davis founded Renew Rockland along with residents Zander Shaw and Amy Files.
City officials stated in the news release that they welcome citizen input as Rockland “works to forge a more responsive and effective city government, including the handling of solid waste.”
A contract to handle solid waste between the Orrington-based PERC and 187 municipalities, including Rockland, expires in March 2018. Rockland must decide whether or not to continue current solid waste and recycling programs through PERC.
Another option would be to join many of the other municipalities in that group planning to make a change and send their solid waste to a facility in Hampden run by Fiberight, which will turn waste into biofuel.
Yet another choice would be to send waste to a municipally owned waste-to-energy facility in the Portland area called ecomaine.
