BREWER, Maine — Brewer police are looking for a young man suspected of being involved in a “harassment incident” on Tuesday afternoon on Washington Street.
Around 2:50 p.m., a white male with dark hair believed to be in his late teens or early 20s in a black car “made a lewd comment to a young female,” Deputy Chief Jason Moffitt said in a Wednesday news release. The car had two white vertical stripes over each wheel well. The woman was a pedestrian.
“There was no force used and evidence suggests this was not an attempted abduction, as has been rumored,” Moffitt said.
Under Maine law, harassment involves a person engaging in any course of conduct with the intent to harass, torment or threaten another person after having been previously warned not to do so by police or a court. It is usually a misdemeanor carrying a penalty of up to 6 months in jail and up to a $1,000 fine, but can be a Class C crime under certain circumstances, with penalties of up to 5 years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine.
Making offensive or insulting remarks could result in a charge of disorderly conduct, which is a misdemeanor.
Moffitt said the investigation indicates there is no elevated safety risk to the community.
Detective Scott Young is investigating and hopes to speak with the person in the vehicle. Anyone who knows of a vehicle matching the description is asked to call Brewer police at 989-7001.
