LIMESTONE, Maine — An anonymous user of the social media app Yik Yak earlier this week posted a threat for April 15 against the Limestone Community School, which shares a building with the Maine School of Science and Mathematics.

Officials at the schools and local police have investigated and alerted parents about the threat, without specifying exactly what it was, and indicated that classes would proceed Friday as scheduled.

In a message emailed to parents on Thursday, Limestone Community School Principal Susan White and MSSM Executive Director Luke Shorty said they were made aware of the threatening post on Tuesday and immediately contacted Limestone Police Chief Stacey Mahan.

The post already had been removed when school officials and police tried to view it, however, and no additional threats have been posted on Yik Yak since, according to the email to parents.

“After the Limestone Police Department’s initial investigation and their continued monitoring of the ‘Yik Yak’ site, they have been unable to substantiate the threat and they feel that with stepped up security, it is safe to proceed with school [on Friday, April 15],” White and Shorty wrote to parents.

Staff is taking extra safety precautions and will be monitoring the front doors during student arrival, and they have practiced lockdown procedures with students, according to the email. The Police Department also will have a presence on campus.
