CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts — Freshman third baseman Maegan Lantz drove in four runs with a homer and a single and junior Taylor Cabe tossed 3 ⅔ innings of four-hit, one-run relief as Harvard outlasted Maine for its sixth straight softball win, 10-7 on Thursday.
Lantz’s team-leading fifth homer of the season, a two-run blast down the left-field line following a Maddy Kaplan double in the first inning, staked the Crimson to a lead it would never relinquish.
A pair of two-out errors gifted the Crimson three unearned runs in the second to expand the lead to 5-0.
Rachel Carlson’s two-run single pulled Maine within 5-2 in the third but Harvard answered with three in the bottom of the third on Rhianna Rich’s RBI single and Lantz’s two-run single.
Maine erupted for five in the fourth to pull within 8-7 behind Janelle Bouchard’s two-run double, RBI singles by Maddie Decker and and Erika Leonard and a Kristen Niland sacrifice fly.
But Cabe shut down the Bears after that and Harvard added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Kaplan doubled and singled for the 17-13 winners to complement Lantz. Zoe Galindo singled twice.
Rachelle Harvey had three singles for 15-14 Maine and Leonard had a pair of base hits.
Women’s Lacrosse
USM 19, St. Joseph’s 1
At Gorham, Sam Campobasso and Lauren Lessard combined for seven goals and six assists as the University of Southern Maine cruised past Maine Maritime Academy.
Lessard led all scorers with seven points on three goals and four assists while Campobasso tallied four goals and dished out two assists for USM (3-6). Sarah Pelligrinelli, Tayla Smedberg and rookie Kenzie Kidder scored three goals apiece. Miriam Wood earned her first career win stopping two shots.
Rachel Redles scored for MMA (0-11) Sierra James and Christina Wilson split the goaltending chores as each played a half and combined for 11 saves.
Baseball
USM 9, St. Joseph’s 8
At Gorham, the 18th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied from a three-run deficit late in the game to defeat St. Joseph’s.
USM (16-5) trailed 8-5 entering the bottom of the seventh but tied it on Sam Dexter’s solo home run, an RBI single by Brandon Martins and an RBI triple by Nick DiBiase.
The Huskies scored the winning run in the eighth when Sam Stauble was awarded first base on a catcher’s interference call with the bases loaded, scoring Jake Dexter for the go-ahead run.
