THOMASTON, Maine — Police say they are investigating whether there are more victims of a 64-year-old Thomaston man who was arrested Wednesday, accused of sexually assaulting two young girls.

Robert J. Robinson served as a volunteer driver for the Sunday school bus for the Thomaston Baptist Church and police want to speak with a few other girls whom he had contact with, according to an affidavit filed in court by Knox County Sheriff’s Office Detective Justin Twitchell.

Robinson was also the town’s animal control officer and traffic officer but resigned after the investigation began, according to police.

Robinson was charged with two counts of Class A gross sexual assault, two counts of Class B unlawful sexual contact and two counts of Class D unlawful sexual touching. One victim was 12 and the other 10, according to the affidavit.

Police began its investigation last week when the mother of one of the girls named as a victim in the case contacted them.

The 10-year-old said Robinson sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions while he baby-sat her, according to the affidavit, and threatened repeatedly to kill her if she were to tell anyone about what he was doing. The girl also reported seeing other girls at Robinson’s home, according to the affidavit.

Both victims also said that Robinson would give them gifts such as money, phone cards and toys.

On Sunday, while the investigation was ongoing, Robinson stopped at the homes of both victims. He was ordered to leave the first home and in the second he left a package at the door which contained a note saying he was sorry and that he missed her, according to the affidavit. The package also included a child’s electronic tablet.

Police interviewed Robinson on Tuesday, according to the police affidavit. Robinson initially denied sexually assaulting the girls but later admitted he had, saying he found them attractive and that is why he selected them.

Bail was set at $25,000 unsecured and Robinson was released from the Knox County Jail in Rockland after posting the bail.
