PORTLAND, Maine — The Trenton Thunder rallied for three runs in the ninth inning on Monday night to pull out a 7-5 Eastern League baseball victory over the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field.
Portland (4-8) had scored five runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. However, Trenton (7-4) responded.
The Thunder got a run back in the eighth on Tyler Austin’s sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 5-4, then came through in the ninth. Jake Cake delivered a two-run single off loser Rob Wort (0-2), then added an insurance run on a throwing error.
Jonathan Holder (1-1) earned the win in relief for Trenton, allowing only one hit and no runs while striking out six in 2⅔ innings. Mark Montgomery got the save with a scoreless ninth.
Making his Double-A debut, Jordan Betts delivered a bases-clearing, three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Sea Dogs a 5-3 lead against Thunder starter Brady Lail.
Portland starter Justin Haley went five innings and surrendered eight hits and three earned runs, but received a no decision.
The series continues Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
